CO-DRIVE 6/25

Post by bugman1964 »

Was wondering if anyone would mind me co-driving their car at winchester. Rear wheel drive would be nice but beggars can't be choosers right :lol: .

Might have to do 3 runs in each. Both are cars I've been interested in driving.

Hey John do you commute in the winter in your mx5?

I do indeed, usually with the top down. :D It's my daily driver. I know you've only driven the Ae86 once so it would be cool if you drove it more so you can give me some feedback on the setup in addition to driving technique. Feel free to co-drive or ride along as much as you want. Is the suxass being worked on or are you just looking for something different?

yeah...

Bugbomb = Mike
bugman1964 = Jacob

it's confusing...

I'm going to be running my car twice jacob... first 6 runs with street tires, second 6 with r-comps just to see how they compare. So we'll have to figure out when's the best time for you to drive it while still having time to swap tires. I also have a feeling with the latest suspension tweaks it's going to be really oversteery on the r-comps... so for your benefit and my wallets you might want to run on the street tires lol.

Lol, yeah, you shouldn't pull tricks like that when I'm not fully fueled up on coffee at the office! =)

No, I leave the Star Specs on year round, including during that crazy snow storm. Most folks do use winter tires though, I've just lived in a lot of high snowy areas where technique in a moderate climate like here in metro DC is enough. The only issues with driving an mx5 in the winter is being cognisent of the low ground clearance & the plastic nose is really soft so debris, sand, etc. really ding and scratch it if you do not use a bra or protectant film. Like any car, salt isn't a friend either. I keep a fleece blanket & gloves behind the passenger seat for cold top down driving.

Good idea. Might be a good day for me to do the same. To make it fair though, you have to do street, r, street or r, street, r to account for temp differences throughout the day and you learning the course.

Thanks for the info john, I've been thinking about trying to find some one that would want to trade me a miata for my impreza straight up. My only concern was driving a miata in the snow, but I'm a believer in snow tires. I even run them on my impreza. lol.

Mike, I'm fine with street tires. I'm more interested in a fun drive then going fast, been there done that. Now fast and fun is a different matter.

Denise drives her miata in the winter with snow tires, it does fine and hers doesn't even have an LSD. I would say it was as good, maybe better in the snow than my RS was on all seasons before I got snow tires.

lol, this isn't GRM... I don't think the conditions will change that much and I usually max out my time pretty quick...

If I went street, r-comp, street with only 3 runs on the streets at the end I think I would have a hard time re-calibrating to the different tires.

Cool, you'll have no problems with the miata in the winter. No different than driving any other rear wheel drive in the snow. You just can't install a plow easily. ;)
As far as fun vs. fast, 80's 1.6L 'rollas have that down! Like blackbelt level even. I mean, when I'm on course, the car isn't going, the cones are moving towards ME. Now that's un-fast. The sticky r-comps are to keep the car from rolling backwards. :lol: :lol:

Mike, you never know, GRM might be there! Slap on a sticker and that 'rolla could be a cover story.

For what it's worth, my miata is also available to you, Jake. RE11's and a pretty good alignment/corner-balance.

I'm so late to this conversation... but.... snow tires are great! And Miatas in snow are great - the almost perfect f/r weight balance and lightness make them really easy to control. My only issue is lack of ground clearance. I almost got stuck this past winter, but that was because the car was kind of floating on about 5-6 inches of snow.

I've realized I cant give up my Rs so that means I have to try and get a miata some other way. Basically when I had my miata I wanted an impreza and now that I dont have my miata and I have the RS I want a miata again. So in short I just need to own both. I just gotta come up with funding for a miata.
