CDC 2018 Index

Post by BugBomb »

A couple things to remember when looking at this:

First, Almost everyone will look at the example sheet and say that this car shouldn't be penalized so much, or that car should be penalized more. Since a simple suspension modifier proves to be too complex, This index continues to assume each car has the best possible suspension installed and it is perfectly tuned (Which is not the case for many of the example vehicles).

Second, like every index, this is an extreme compromise. Making an index is really tough. Greg and I put a lot of hours into this and I am still just somewhat OK with it. We run at 3 different venues. It's difficult to balance an index when some cars perform much better at one venue than another. Overall, I think this is an improvement over the previous index, but there are things I am still unhappy about. For one, I think Jordan's car gets the short end of the stick, but hopefully those pretty Hoosiers will help offset that.

One improvement over the previous index is this now uses actual CDC car data from our participants to form the categories. This minimizes the amount of people who are right on the edge of one HP or weight category. Eventually I think we will get to a calculated index, but this is a step in the right direction.

Tires:
1- < 100 TW : 1.03
2- 200 - 100 : 1.01
3- 300 - 201 : 1.00
4- > 301 TW : 0.99

Wheel Horsepower:
1- >320 whp : 1.04
2- 251-320 : 1.03
3- 211-250 : 1.02
4- 171-210 : 1.01
5- 131-170 : 1.00
6- 106-130 : 0.99
7- <105 whp : 0.98

Curb Weight:
1- <1700 lbs : 1.035
2- 1701-2000 : 1.025
3- 2001-2300 : 1.015
4- 2301-2600 : 1.010
5- 2601-2900 : 1.000
6- 2901-3200 : 0.990
7- 3201-3500 : 0.985
8- >3500 lbs : 0.980

Each one is arranged so that the lowest number would be the fastest bracket in that category. So if you see a '1' in someone's index, you know they are serious about something.

Looks good to me, Mike. Simple, and grounded in real-world data - mission achieved. Thanks for yours and Greg's hard work and for staying open to everyone's thoughts and recommendations.

Curb weight is the actual weight (not necessarily published or what's on your doorjam) w/o driver?

To anyone that's "on the edge" between favorable/unfavorable, this is your opportunity to mod/de-mod appropriately! ;)
