Weights and WHP - database

Post by mla163 »

I was thinking it might not be a bad idea to post the weights and wheel horsepower ratings for common cars that people like to autocross. If someone comes out for the first time, they may not know their car's weight and whp for the index. We don't need every car, just the common ones. Is there a website that has all this stuff available?

I'll do a little research and find some info. If anyone else wants to pitch in, that would be great. Just post the WHP, weight and cite the source.

Some cars we should do are...

WRX & STi
Civic (various years and models)
Mini
Mini S
Miata
S2000
Corvette (Various years and models)
Mustang (Various years and models)
M3 & 3 series (Various years and models)
RX8
Mazda 3
Evo

and any other relevant models

I find most of this can be found on edmunds.com

they have 99% of vehicles weights all the way back to 1990, and they're flywheel hp. take about 15% off that and that's your wheel hp...

it can't really be printed out and had at the auto-x though...

for the record my '89 Corolla SR5 is about 2300 lbs w/ approximately 75 whp

'89 RX-7 TurboII - 270 rwhp - Megasquirt3
'89 Corolla SR5 - 4A-GE 20 Valve - Megasquirt2
'01 Impreza 2.5RS - Rallycross Stock AWD

01 S2000 - 240 flywheel hp, curb weight 2809 lbs via Edmunds

probably around 200 to the wheels depending on dyno

In some cases the conversion loss is closer to 20%
Here is an example based on a couple of cars Ihave owned:

2002 WRX, advertised 227HP> Actual dyno HP ~ 185
1990 Mustang 5.0 Advertised 225 HP > Actual dyno HP ~ 185

On the other hand, it's well know that a 2004 Cobra Mustang advertised at 390HP makes very close to 390HP at the wheels.

Basically advertised HP is whatever the manufacturers want to advertise. If they want more sales they raise the #. If they want lower insurance costs they lower the #.

So if we have actual dyno tests, that may be better than Edmunds HP# x0.85

E36 M3 - curb weight 3175 lbs - advertised power 240 hp - bimmerforums is in its usual state of massive slowness right now, but I believe that a stock car is normally in the 200 whp range.

1994 Mazda Miata

Weight = 2290 Pounds
HP(factory rating) = 128 HP

Wheel HP now... would be lucky to be getting 100hp at the wheels.

My Cars.....And those like them that appear this year.....

For C5 and C6 Corvette (1997-2009)

LS3, LS7, and LS9 engines all exceed 350 RWHP. LS2, LS6, LS1 (non-Z06, 2004 and earlier) certainly under 350 RWHP. 2001 Z06 was under 350 RWHP. My current car, an LS7, exceeds 350 RWHP.

Weight approximately 3150 for all models, except ZR1, which is heavier but well less than 3500.

For 2008-2009 Ford Mustang V8

Bullitt, and Mustang GT with intake or other bolt ons, about 260-270 RWHP. Stock Mustang GT is a tough call, depending on driveline loss; 300 Flywheel HP = 255 RWHP assuming 15 percent loss. My current car, a Bullitt, exceeds 250 RWHP.

Weight, a tough call. My owner's manual says 3550. With fluids, certainly. I haven't lightened it at all. I'm going to try to get it weighed during the year to make sure of the weight.

For grins & chuckles since there are so many MGBs running out there. The GT weighs just short of 2100 lbs & was rated @ 79 SAE horsepower. That's @ the flywheel w/o an alternator or water pump. The current engine has been breathed on a little bit but Corvette owners do not tremble when I pull up next to them @ stoplights.Neither do Miata owners. Alex
