Winter Small Bore projects.

Post by eage8 »

just wondering what every was doing to their small bore cars over the winter :)

The corolla is finally coming along. I got it running on the megasquirt yesterday after working out a few bugs. after I fixed a few mis-wired things and fixed the polarity on the igniter (after burning the crap out of my finger... think running at 95% duty instead of 5%... it was hot) it starts up great.

now I just need to tune it so its actually drivable and replace the AFM and intake collector with velocity stacks :D

I also have to get my used A6s mounted (instead of the A3S05s I was using at the last event) and install my rear koni yellows and a front sway bar and I'll be good to go :)

so I have a lot to do in 2 weeks haha. what are you guys up to?

Mostly just maintenance.

Tow hooks
Replace damaged undertray and missing fasteners
Zip-Tie tie-rod end boot in place
Pads, rotors, brake hoses (I damaged the new junction block so that turned into a two week headache)
New rear calipers
Brake bleed
Oil change

UPS delivered my secret weapon this morning.

I wanted to get an alignment, but I am going to collect tire temps again before doing that.

I replaced my completely blown, broken yellow Konis with new Koni coilovers and big eibach springs all around, and scaled it. Got rid of the old V710's and replaced with something new. Learned how to tune my car and it rips. oh, and I fixed my broken drivers window so I don't get wet. White Miata.

I've got three small bore cars here, a 90 Miata, 99 Miata, and the wife's 93.

And I haven't done a thing to any of them over the winter.

Last fall I swapped out the suspension in the 90 cause I had a blown shock. Sure I could have replaced one shock, but instead I went with Tein Flex coilovers all around. Got that done in time to do the last test & tune of 2009 and I left that event all smiles.

I picked up another set of wheels over the winter but I'm waiting to see what the experts say about the latest batch of street tires (Falken 615K?) before writing that check. I'll be running either the old RE01Rs or newer Azenis 615 for the foreseeable future.

We were going to do suspension on the wife's '93 (planning on Flyin Miata 2.5 kit) but that money wound up getting poured into the 90, so the 93 is still box stock. And ugly.

The 99 has just sat around all winter getting dirty cause I've had the 90 in the garage, first trying to figure out why the stereo only worked when it felt like it, then just general tidying up and maintenance stuff.

I'm only planning on upgrading items as they need replacing for the time being....and just learn how to drive fwd.

I did remove the rear seats a week or two ago, I need to get behind the rear panels to ditch the seat belt mechanisms which are no doubt a few pounds. May look into ditching the rear wiper mechanism....

Probably going to try disconnecting the front swaybar for autocross as well

Although we are not in small bore, we did some significant work on the SUXASS this winter.

-Removed transmission/driveshaft

-Complete tear-down of transmission
-replaced driven shaft, several destroyed bearings, and ring/pinion for front differential

-Installed urethane bushings for the shifter

-Took the entire rear end out of the car
-replaced both rear crossmembers and installed more urethane bushings
-put spacers on the driveshaft loop to give a little clearance

-Replaced the entire steering column
-removed steering quickener and replaced with stock WRX column
-custom-fabricated a bushing at the firewall for the new column
-transplanted column height adjuster, lock cylinder, and wiper/light controls to new column

Total time invested: 21 hours :)

awesome, is the transmission fixed and back in yet?

how come you went with a WRX rack instead of an STi rack? I imagine the WRX rack is going to be amazingly slow compared to the old one with the quickener.

We simply removed the quickener. We always had the wrx rack. It came with my swap car. The trans is back in. Have been driving the car for a couple weeks now. Drove it to work today. Nedd to re-work the alignment situation. Changing the rear crossmember fouled some things up.

That was our actual hours. You don't want to know how many hours a dealership would assume for that much work.

The SUXASS is now 3.0 turns lock-to-lock. The STi rack would be nice with only 2.7 turns, but not even close to the quickener's 2.0 turns. Unfortunately, the quickener is better for rally than auto-x.

Motor/transmission/wheels/tires is all that needs to be done to the MR2. Everything else has been taken care of. Wheels/tires/transmission is the easy part, motor still needs rebuilding.
I've been tied up with moving and had funds tied into other things this winter, so it's looking like for the first half of the season the 86 will be run.

I've been doing a bit of research and apparently the trans I have from my 4AF is a C52, just with a lower final drive than the one from the GT-S and I assume MR2. If you want it you can have it. the final drive from your c50 will swap over. I think you might have to swap bell housings or something though, I think the MR2 has the clutch fork on the opposite side. So in summary, I have no idea how MR2s work, but I have a corolla C52 trans that you can have :)

do "winter" small bore projects include the car still on jackstands currently ...

if so I have done

new wheels/tires
front sway bar
new seat
6-pt harness
new rear calipers
SS brake lines
new hard line between the rear calipers
new pads
greased the front caliper pins
oil/brake fluid/clutch fluid
most of the interior is now in the dumpster ... it actually looks hilarious now because the drivers side has no carpet and no door trim with an OMP seat and 6-pt harness while the passenger's side has full trim/carpet and the stock seat ... I got lazy

Just put my race suspension and tires back on...not that it matters since I'll probably only make a handful of CDC points events(atleast looking at the current schedule). Some of which I may not even run my car.

Darn, This looks scary. I just installed a new Racing Beat front bar. That sounded pretty good until I saw all of the other posts. At any rate it will be a very competitive and hence FUN season! Can't Wait!!

As of this afternoon the HG parking lot is still cover with (now black) snow.
