Bowie Auto-x April 3rd

Post by BugBomb »

I was pleasantly surprised at the complexity and fun-factor of that course. Despite the low times, it was still interesting without being too busy. Overall, it was a fun day and absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened. At all.

I'm already working on results, but it will take some time since we had some timing issues with the barcode reader. Still a few bugs to work out.

Yep, just your regular superb CDC event. Thanks Ed, Mike, Jake, Jen and all the rest. Had an appointment so sorry I had to bail early and not help with cleanup. Hope the helmet helps. My pics are on the CDC pool. Links to my vids and pics are also below.

Besides those few bugs with the bar-codes, another one in the books for the 2010 season!

Steve, the one pic I got of your capri flexing at a cone turned out fairly cool.

quick thoughts:

1. Timing display rocks... I think using the minute digit to display cone count is really clever.
2. Yay slalom!
3. Smallbore really heating up... going to be an interesting series to watch.

Their is a cone counter on the display?? I hadn't noticed. Smallbore is a blast, plus you can actually hear in grid and after running.. Those cobras are annoying.

Can we give Stuart Fain a season pass?? boy, it's fun beating a GT3 in an old Miata.

FYI, if you make any little mistakes AJ beats you.

Great event! Grid and Timing worked GREAT. Fun course, but... the second half was HARD. I never figured out a satisfactory line that allowed me to both maintain momentum (absolutely necessary in a Miata) and not understeer atrociously. thanks to the organizers for another good job.

Every time I came through the stop box I could hear that course laughing at me behind me... or maybe that was just Dan working the stop box :)

That was definitely one of the harder courses we've done at bowie I think but it was still fun as always.

Thanks guys for yet another great event :)

I had a great time as always. Yay weather people for making us think it'd be nice and warm in the morning  the Cobras exhaust sure do make a great heater LOL. I was very happy with the times I got. I exceeded my goal of a 34 flat and pulled out a 33.92 on my last run. Happy I kept all the runs clean too. Small Bore is def getting
more competitive. My friend Randy ran his '97 Miata to a low 35 on street tires and this being his first time Autoxing in almost a year and his first time ever autoxing that car. He just got it and modded it within the past few months.. He said he'll run CDC events this year so he will be another contender in SB.

I should have my video, along with Jasons afternoon runs in my car, up sometime tomorrow night most likely.

It was a glorious day. It was good to get the Daytona Coupe back out with the nutty CDC gang. I'm afraid we may have lost Fast Freddie to small boreland. He'll be getting a tattoo and be on Twitter before we know it. Why not when the Civics (on street tires) and Miatas are beating Cobras and Porsches? But remember who still has the hammer: No, not "The Hammer," Wade and Larry in the snakes. Jim Harris is always a force to be reckoned with, too. Some really good driving and competition out there. Thanks for a good time. See everybody again soon.

crazy course. When I walked it, I honestly thought it was going to suck.....but when I drove it, I had a blast! Huge rewards for a good line and huge punishment for the wrong one. I'll post a vid once I d/l it from the camera.

I heard Fred has a "Zoom-Zoom" tattoo on his ankle now, but he had long pants on yesterday so I didn't get to see it.

I'm waiting for AJ's video so I can see where he beat me this time. I definitely need to learn to drive farther ahead with the new tires.

Wade,
Careful, when children get older(and half deaf from loud exhaust) and begin to rebel, they tend to get mx-5 tattoos and small convertibles... To spare you that pain as a parent, feel free to drop the FFR off at this address.... :)

I had a lot of fun, and this was my first CDC event. I'll definitely come back again. (Not so sure about my friend, though. I'm surprised her boyfriend made her stick around and ride along with him for his last runs in the 4th heat.)

I attribute my slow times to not having enough stickers on my car. Next time I'll keep in mind to put more tape on my car (and learn to find a better line.)

Thanks for being patient while we work the bugs out of our timing system. For anyone that doesn't remember the old one, it's already much more reliable. The timing app had several lock ups which I will hopefully fix before the next event, and there *will* be a hot backup running so we don't lose times. We may have had some problems with barcodes taped to the inside of the windows. Sandy dirt and scratches may have scattered the laser somewhat. That, and the full sun (not complaining) didn't help. Otherwise, I think we can ditch the time sheets permanently after the next Bowie event.

8-) Congrats Wade! I had a fun out there and watching you and your daughter take the FTD is awesome!

We were in the same workstation in the afternoon run, just in case you were wondering.

Was a good day. Ill be back for the next one for sure.

yeah, i had a good time, i was not a fan of the second half of the course, partly because it was hard to find a line, especially after the double gate to the finish line, but also, because the times were so low, and the cars were running so close together, that if any cones were displaced by the preceeding car, the course workers rarely had time to fix them before the following car came through. i know that my fastest time that day was because the second inside cone on the last double gate was missing when i came through, i tried to guess where it was to maintain the integrity of my run, but when i saw i had improved over a second from my previous run, i felt like it was a dishonest improvement, but then my last run after that was only 1/10 of a second slower, so i guess i really did learn something warranted my improvement in times.
