thoughts on a popular subaru mod

Post by draxcaliber »

so while working the course this past Saturday, i was thinking about how tight the course was and how important it was to really thread some of the gates at just the right angles to clear them. and there was a good amount of cone shagging yesterday and it occurred to me that this is where an popular mod with the subaru guys might be working against them...those big rally armor mud flaps they all love so much! i mean, it is making the car about an inch or two wider on both sides on all corners, so depending on how easy it is to pop those things on and off, it might be a worth while to actually take them off while autocrossing. maybe i'm thinking about it too much, but just light weight, size can be the enemy too!

I have them on my subaru and I don't really think it's that big of an issue.

Mine are made out of urethane so it's pretty flexible, I don't think it would knock over a cone very easily.

My corollas tires that stick out 2 inches are much worse :)

I took mine off back in the day because they scraped so badly at the bumps at Harry Grove.

I don't miss em too much.

The problem isn't that the mudflaps are too wide, but rather your tires are too narrow! Get some man sized tires on there and you'll be so fast the extra width won't be an issue.

I've got the full complement of OEM mud guards on my '90 Miata. Someone told me I should take the back ones off since they're 'cone catchers' but I like the look too much to mess with that. I'll take my chances. It's not like I'm getting that close to the slalom cones anyway.
