2014 Season Ya'll!

Post by ericw »

What events is everyone planning on doing this year? Any plans for different tracks? New Jersey? Mid-Ohio? Watkins? Lime Rock? NASA NE runs a lot of different tracks within a 4-5 hr drive...

I plan on U-Hauling to VIR some this year and perhaps NJMP but I don't think my shoulder will be ready by the 21st for VIR so I think my first event will be 4/26-27 - NASA @ Summit Point Main. Hoping to do 8-10 weekends this year.

Here is my tentative plan, assuming the car(s) are ready and my move is finished by April (hence no March events). I don't think I will make all of them, I just list out all the possible ones and try to make as many as I can till a) the car breaks b) i break or c) run out of money hahahaha. With "c" i can do autoX to keep the need to speed fed.

Image

Grey ones are more tentative as they require a day or so off from work.

That's an intense schedule, Spencer! I'm planning on doing most of the NASA-MA Summit events and the VIR events when the weather is nice. I may try to go to NASA East nationals, but we'll see.

Eric, what's your U-haul plan, i.e. what type of vehicle are you renting and are you using a dolly or flat bed?

That plan actually went to hell lol. Looks like I will have to pull out of this entire season with the mini what with the wheel failure, fire, replacing the wheels with forged ones and broken supercharger (still not fixed) lining up with the house down payment and new water heater needed. My car budget is gone and then some. I already paid for arrive and drive at 2 chump car races and a lemons so those will still happen but anything I haven’t already put money on or requires the mini is off the table for now. I went to SPK via a groupon so I didn’t get too depressed :-/

That sucks Spencer.  :(  We poured out some coolant for you weekend before last.

Pheonix, who are you? I think Scherpf and I are both tentatively planning on doing the July NASA VIR event. And to Matt's question - I looked into the UHaul thing and it's pretty expensive. I may just put in some maintenance work and $ on my dad's truck and see if I can get that to the point where I feel comfortable driving it that far. Not planning on using a dolly - open car trailer from uhaul or perhaps someone who isn't using theirs that weekend.

tbh once the house stuff is sorted, I will come autoX in the wagon so i don't forget how to drive. Plus it's cheap and I don't need fancy brake pads. It would be a 200hp 4000lbs goof ball body rolling all over the place on stock suspension but at least it is running (and it's an autotragic lol).

But it should have better balance [than the mini or integra for instance] and be more exciting exiting corners ;)

I'd really like to try this this year, I have concerns about using my daily driver though, maybe I can get one of those rental mustangs from Hertz... :D

IMO you would be fine. If it rains you can always just skip your session.

Rentals are expensive and have shty brakes.

If any CDC members choose to do any NASA events and you want/need an instructor, I'd be happy to work with you. Ask for Matt Huffman when you sign up.

They rescheduled the RaceDaze event that was July 4th weekend, so now they are having a TrackDaze open practice. I signed up because they are have 4 30 min sessions and 2 hours open track time each day. That's 8 hours of track time in one weekend :o Great deal if you want a lot of practice.

Finally some good news, it took 2 replacement superchargers but the mini is running on its own power now and not shredding belts or making weird noises. Just a caliper to rebuild left and it should back to normal. I am thinking of doing the autoX on the 12th and maybe one more as a bit of a shakedown before I take it on track again as it was quite an intensive operation and I would rather have something come up at 45mph than over 100mph!

I was going to sign up for the SCCA event at Shenandoah on the 19th :-/ VIR is a bit far for a first event post-surgery. AAA has towed me home from Summit Point, VIR might be pushing it hahaha. Should be a good test of the new wheels, they do look stronger... I haven’t actually registered for anything yet as I want to run it around on the street a bit first, and just finished moving last weekend. Swapping the wheels inside a garage will be much nicer than on the street! I drove it 7 miles on Thursday and I had truly forgotten how hard it turned/stopped compared to the wagon and chumpcar hahahaha it is a such a fun car :D super excited to start running it hard again!!!

Thanks man, I like them too :)

Best part is my wheel scrubbing brush fits in between the spokes so they aren't a pain to clean, well that and the design seem pretty solid from a strength pov lol

I am registered for NASA Hpde3 at summit point in august. And here is a video from VIR. My best time was 2:28.333 with an instructor in the car. But no video of those...http://youtu.be/jCDybwyXOgk?t=3m10s

I just registered for the august 16/17 nasa event, see you there! I should have requested a check ride for TT but I can't make up my mind of when I will actually start running in that group.
