Summit Point Time Trial May3

Post by Bryan62 »

Our local Corvair club is part of a regional council that has been doing track events since 1974, and we are hosting an event this year on Summit Point's main course. Although started as a Corvair group, all makes are welcome! See below for complete information.

ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Monday, May 3, 2010. Time Trials at
Summit Point. Brought to you by the Northeast Corvair Council (NECC).
Sign up at www.neccmotorsports.com

Event Description

Option 1 - Time Trials. Time trials consist of high-speed open-track
sessions in the morning and individual timed laps in the afternoon.
Lap times will be recorded by traditional stop-watch methods. $225.

Option 2 - Taste of Track. The "Taste of the Track" option is a
low-cost introductory program oriented toward first timers. Drivers
lap the track in their own cars for approximately one-half hour behind
a pace car. $29.

The Track: Summit Point Motorsports Park is a road racing and driver
training facility located in Jefferson County, West Virginia about two
hours west of Washington, D.C. in the state's Eastern Panhandle.
Address: Summit Point Motorsports Park 201 Motorsports Park Circle,
Summit Point, WV 25446. Visit their new website at:
http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com/

The Circuit: Summit Point Main is a 10-turn, 2.0-mile (3.2 km) road
course that features a 2,900-foot (880 m) main straight. The Main
Circuit was repaved in the Fall of 2007.

Host Hotel: Best Western Leesburg-Dulles, 726 E Market Street,
Leesburg, Virginia 20176, $99 + tax room rate per night. Reservations:
(800) 780-7234 or (703) 777-9400, ask for the "Corvair Fair" rate.
This is the same hotel as the one for the 2010 Virginia Vair Fair,
which will be held on the preceding weekend.

Information About NECC: The Northeast Corvair Council ("NECC")
conducts high-speed track events for sports car enthusiasts. This
year, 2010, we will be conducted time trials at Summit Point, WV and
Monticello, NY! Visit our Announcements page for the latest
information on our 2010 schedule! Our history goes back to 1974, when
we conducted time trials for Corvairs at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
But you don't need a Corvair to drive in our events. Several years
ago, we opened up our track events to all other makes of cars. Our
starting grid often includes Mazdas, Nissans, Porsches, Mustangs, Evos,
Mini Coopers and more. At one event, we even had a race-prepared Yugo!
And so, you're invited to drive at our events, even if you don't own a
Corvair!

I'm too wimpy to do real track days but I could get into this stuff. Any idea of how fast the pace car gets? We did the Summit Point 'parade' laps last year Labor Day weekend and had some big fun running 8/10ths. I could easily spend a Monday at Summit Point for more of the same.

PS is it really a parade if you work up a sweat trying to keep up with the pace car?

Yep, I'd call it about 8/10ths. I did an event with them at Summit Point a few years ago and I'd call it a brisk drive - the pace car was a regular street car driven by one of the more accomplished Corvair Racers from the west coast. Nice thing about doing the Taste is you get all the spectating you want to go with it :-)
