Looking for some advice on a decent Data logger...has anyone worked with any of them? Can I pull enough useful information off the OBDII to go that route - like steering inputs, throttle control, etc.?
I like GEMS and Motec, but I haven't found anything in the realm of possiblity for a low-budget racer.

Toby and Kenny are pleased with the Racelogic VBox setup they have in their car. Combined with the TrackVision software it can be a very powerful tool. However, I think it's going to cost you several hundreds of dollars (if not more) to get the type of data acq you're looking for. The GTech-Pro RR is a simple yet decent system that is much more affordable.

The other system to look at that can be used in any type of racing.
AutoX, Road racing, ect is the Traqmate GPS Data Acquisition system.
There are all kinds of things you can run off this. Throttle position, braking, ect. You can even sync up a video system with it that will show you RPMs, ect overlapped with the video.
The cool thing about it is that they have a website where you can download your data and if someone else has run where you did you can "overlay" your runs with theirs and see where you are better or where you can improve.

I think CDOC carries them also.

We have a Race Technology DL1 setup.kyle.bowker wrote:Toby and Kenny are pleased with the Racelogic VBox setup they have in their car.
The OBD port is typically only useful for RPM. You can get throttle position tapping the ECU (My car has e-gas) or a sensor mounted by the throttle butterfly. Steering angle requires a string pot. (I don't know of anyone trying to tap the traction control systems.)Looking for some advice on a decent Data logger...has anyone worked with any of them? G-Tech Pro RR is pretty nice to measure g's and rpm, and it's track map function is surprisingly accurate given the lack of GPS. It is also easy to move between cars.
Race Technology DL1, Racepak G2X/IQ3, and Traqmate are the most popular GPS-based systems. The functionalities are pretty similar, (DL1/G2X/IQ3 are more advanced by a hair over Traqmate) so what your friends use (to make comparison easy) may be the more important determining factor.

MaxQData is pretty popular amongst autocrossers.

Lots of affordable options in there.
