It may have been FoMoCo's hopefully optimistic thinking that the Capri could compete with the Miata but it never came close in terms of sales, trophies, or smiles. There is a certain demographic that overlaps between the two, that being people looking for exceptionally cheap and basic no frills convertible car for cruising the retirement communities of south Florida, but in terms of performance the Capri is a donkey and the Miata is a thoroughbred Arabian. No offense. It seems silly to compare performance between the two when new since today you'd be hard pressed to find a decent XR2Ti, whereas you can spit and land on a decent Miata that has more than likely been upgraded with aftermarket performance parts to make it go even better. Plus RWD > FWD in almost every circumstance (forgetting for a moment that Brian and Ernest do have very quick Honda Civics - they're extreme outliers). I think a clutch job is enough to relegate most Capris to the junkyard. If you squint they appear reminiscent of a poor man's Lotus M100 Elan but they can't hold a candle to the Elan in terms of handling. Cheap motoring certainly offers its own type of thrill and just getting out there and doing it can be fun in its own right but I think you'll quickly grow tired of your Capri's (lack of) performance. R-comps may help but they can only do so much.

I've seen a couple of the 200 that are in existence at Nordschleife when I was stationed in Germany, but I doubt I'll ever see one IRL again =(

homologation specials with turbo cosworth engines (in the middle and making up to 450 hp) and awd that weigh about the same as a CRX :)

they were one of the last group B rally cars made.

Nice! Are they fairly available? How much does a good runner go for?

There was one on eBay a while back: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/24/ebay ... alifornia/

I don't recall how much it ended up selling for.

I couldn't have said it better :)

yeah, that RS200 sold for about $86k which is lower than I would have thought.

I thought that's what Chrysler Lebarons were for ? :)

and if you really want to impress the old folks, a Buick Reatta. Another car I've never seen at an autoX.

They're quite rare, only 200 made for a one-off deal so that they could enter the car into Group B. Besides, with the monster Miata you drive, you'd be bored with a RS200 =P

Quite right, thanks. Plus being a paltry $86k+ it would lower my property value to have something so cheap & disposable sitting around...

I caught a show on Discovery HDT last night on WRC's greatest cars. Lots of love for the Group B and early 2wd cars. It airs again on Feb 5 at noon. My only complaint was that there was low volume background music played over a lot of the footage. I would have rather heard the music from the tail pipe.

Lots of cars in there that are on my list of things I would love to see at an event.
