Shop that can mount and heat cycle?

Post by flohtingPoint »

Since I work out of town and no where near my car, I need to have my roommate pick up my Kumho V710's, have them mounted and heat cycled for me (as I dont trust him to heat cycle $800 worth of tires himself). I was wondering if anyone knew of a shop that can do this in one fell swoop, to minimize complexity of my directions to my not-so mechanically inclined roommate? Any help is appreciated.

I don't know anyone that heat cycles except Tire Rack.

In terms of mounting tires, you can check with:

Tim Minor
Automotive Specialist Center
8411 Lee Hwy
Fairfax, VA 22031
703-573-2775

Tim is a racer and might also know of a place that can heat cycle.

I got jerked around by Tim Minor once. Never again. He would not schedule an appointment with me, instead just telling me to drop by in person. He wasted 2 hours of my life when I drove to his shop after talking to him on the telephone and telling him I was on my way and what time to expect me and then when I got there he refused to mount my tires because it was too close to quitting time. He should have done the job himself if he wanted to let his guys go home at exactly 5pm on the dot or whatever it was. Instead he lost a customer for life because he was unwilling to go the extra mile after telling me he could do it. But if you can deal with BS customer service like that I know Ed Chan has used him before and felt he did a fine job.

I don't know of anyone locally who will do heat cycling service for you like The Tire Rack or Discount Tire Direct. You could try calling Radial Tire in Silver Spring, MD but I've had mixed results with them as well.

You might have to use your first auto-x of the year to heat cycle your tires. I don't know if it's true or not but The Tire Rack says that they can do a much better job at heat cycling tires than you can because they do it in a controlled manner. Next time you're better off paying up front to have it done.

Unfortunately, Tire Rack couldn't for me, as the only place they have the V710's right now is at a warehouse w/out a cycler.

Just like breaking in a motor, everyone has their own opinion on the proper way to break-in or "heat cycle" a new set of race tires.

Kumho offers no advice on their website but here is what Hoosier recommends for their autocross tires:

I have run 6 or 8 sets of race tires and have never had a set heat cycled.
Here is what I have done with 710s, Hoosiers, 888s, ect.

I get my guys to mount them. Put them on the car. Go somewhere to a highway that is not overly crowded or congested and drive them for 15 - 20 minutes at speed. Nothing radical, no weaving just get them up to speed for 15 minutes. Bring them back to the shop, take them off and let them sit overnight.

They are ready to use and will last through 6 or 8 track events running time trials. I can probably get them mounted for you for $20.00 per if they are not too large.

Yea, that's not bad at all. No, not too large. 215/40/16. I had spare 16's sitting around and wanted to fill them with something.
