the Capri Is cooler than you think

Post by thehammer »

As every one here knows, my Capri runs like garbage (sounds like it too). Anyone here know how long it takes, and how difficult it is to swap heads and valves (speaking genreally). my exhaust valves are leaking on my #1cylinder so it runs like crap, i have a car to switch from, if you want the job and are willing to walk me through it/loan me tools   let me know.

but in all seriousness, how long should it take?

It would probably take a competent shadetree mechanic the better part of a day to swap heads. Allow ample time to remove rusty fasteners. Given the value of your Capri you may just want to swap a junkyard head and cross your fingers in the hopes that it will run better than it did before. A valve job will easily cost > $500 in parts and machine work alone if you decide to go that way. Which route you take depends on how much you value your time and how much money you want to sink into a car that is worth basically nothing. You might be better off just buying another Capri that runs.

Also, check this one out: 1994 Mercury Capri Yorktown, VA eBay Item #260577286926

EVERYONE hates on my Capri's

I own another Capri, but it's not a turbo, so i think that I might make a venture to a junkyard to get some new heads

I don't hate it. It's just not loved by many and the market reflects that. When you can get a running Capri for <$1k why bother doing anything to the one you've got? If it was my money and I loved Capris the car that runs like crap would become a parts car to help keep a better example in good shape.

If by solved you mean, you will now be running on only two cylinders, gas and oil will be spraying from the head (like Ed C's car) and the rest of that gas that isn't thrown out of the head will be dumped into the header, where it will quickly meet the ground, because your header/CAT connection does not exist anymore ... then yes, I believe your misfire will be solved by the next auto-x

good luck with the re-build ... I bet if you sell your car for scrap you willl have enough to pick up a decent miata (yes, us miata folk are a one string band)

We dont hate your car, just its condition. If it were actually in good shape I would willingly help you make it better. At this point it is a waste of time and money, a lot of money. It would be a great starter car, but this one is mostly rust and headaches to come.

I wasn't gonna post this cause I have no idea what I would do with two Capris.

PS what's so bad about Miatas with mismatched hardtops? All the cool kids are doing it

PPS I'm the guy who responded to the question "did you get any pictures of the red Capri going really fast?" by saying "I didn't see any Capris going really fast" Saturday.

PPPS thanks for not hitting me for saying that

Yeah, besides, paint is cheap. What is your budget Steve for this miata? So I am guessing "no problems" excludes a broken windshield and a bad cylinder? =) Sorry, couldn't resist... Easy to find a clean one although prices are going to start rising a bit due to season. Be glad to help you wrench on it as well if you get one.

If you really like your car and are able to just swap some parts from a donor to repair it, why not?

You hit the 39 range this weekend. Imagine with the motor running well, a set of light wheels and sticky tires, perhaps some upgraded shocks and some negative camber dialed in on your front wheels...you could do some relative damage. Also why not take off the hardtop when you run, its just extra weight sitting up high on the car.

the edit time expired, I was going to add:

All things considered I think the 39 was a pretty good time for your car....

Thats just my opinion about it though. I like oddball cars autocrossing. The few times i had the failboat 99 grand marquis out last year i did pretty well, and so far I have been improving with the Accent. Nowhere near extremely fast or a threat for FTD or small bore or anything, but for what they are I think I do ok.
