The cost of the torsen is more than twice as much since it requires axles and a driveshaft as well. Also if the VLSD was an option on his car adding it would be ST* leagal.
However the miata VLSD is pretty weak and nationals level autoxers will eat two in a season.

but yeah, being legal for STS is a likely reason that dawned on me after I posted
I have a Mazda 8" VLSD lol, but that doesn't help you...
